Hallo wereld, here I come!

"It will be the best year of your life!"

"My name is Roos and I am from Schiedam in The Netherlands, but currently living the life in Southland, New Zealand.

When my father asked me if I wanted to go on an exchange year I thought he was crazy; me going away for a whole year? No, that is nothing for me, I said. But that was actually the first time I had ever thought about it. I went to an info meeting from STS and I started to read blogs from other people who went on an exchange year. And here I am, on the other side of the world!

I have been here for almost 3 months now, but I already have had an amazing time. It is amazing to learn about a whole new culture and a new country. In Holland I live in a big city with 80.000 people and here in New Zealand I live on a sheep farm in Heddon Bush with about 250 people. At my school in Holland there were 1800 children and in my school here are 500 children.

I go to school in Winton. The school bus picks me up at 7.55am and I am back home at 15.35pm. I also have to wear a school uniform. In Holland I bike 10 minutes to my school and I don’t have to wear a school uniform. I am also having a lot of different subjects. So it is a whole new different experience and that is what I really like about my exchange year. I am learning so many new things.

When I heard I would be going to live on a sheep farm I was really happy. I love animals and I really like to learn about how everything works on a sheep farm. It is lambing time now on the farm and I help a lot with feeding the lambs.

I also do a lot of activities with my school. They organize many trips that are really cool. I went on a ski trip, I went on rock climbing and tramping camp. Both camps were a complete new experience for me because I never did that before. In Holland I love to play field hockey.

When I found out I could also play hockey here in New Zealand in the hockey school team, I really went for it. The team is really good and we have a lot of fun. Three weeks ago my hockey team participated in a tournament. We played a whole week against other schools.

I still have 9 months left here and I’m really looking forward to those months. I cannot wait to learn more and to see a lot more of New Zealand. I never expected that I would go on an exchange year but I am so happy that I am here now. It will be the best year of my life. So remember: Sometimes the things you don’t expect are the things you enjoy the most.

“You have to experience the school spirit!”

"School in the USA and back home are like night and day in comparison. What I miss most is their high school spirit. To join with the rest of the students and teachers and support the school team i something everyone should experience. Be open to all sorts of activities – it will give you a lot."

Henric Engström, exchange student USA

“Bom dia, Flor do Dia!”

"It’s amazing to see what can happen if you just let it happen! Suddenly I was a part of this warm and exciting culture and just went with the flow. I didn’t know the language at all and had to rely on dictionaries and phrasebooks the first months. But one of my strongest and dearest memories was from one of my many sweaty bus trips, when I said something like “in my country” and she totally surprised exclaimed “are you not Brazilian?!”

Tua Sandholm, exchange student Brazil

“I had a fantastic year”

"One winter’s day I left Sweden for a small town in New Zealand. The rest of that year was fantastic. Weekend skiing and the birthday party my host family arranged for me is only two of many examples. I got to see so much thanks to my family and a wonderful North Island trip with STS. Become an exchange student – it’s a possibility that you will never regret!"

Johanna Killander, exchange student New Zealand

“This is once in a lifetime”

"During my stay in Canada I have learnt so much and got to meet a whole different culture. If you are sitting back home and wondering if you too should go – just do it. This is once in a lifetime, you will never get the same chance to experience a new culture in this special way."

Elin Winberg, exchange student in Canada

“The best I ever could have done”

"USA for a full year was the best I ever could have done. I lived in a little nice town in eastern Kentucky with a wonderful family that quickly took me to their hearts. I experienced many new and thrilling things and got friends for life. So don’t hesitate. Begin the adventure of your life!"

Karin Hallgren, exchange student USA

“I’ve learnt so much”

"During my year in France I have experienced so much that I would never have had the chance to live through back home. To have lived with a new family and begun a new school has strengthened my self confidence. I feel like I could manage anything now."

Viktor Sjöblom, exchange student France

“A fantastic year”

"My year in Italy has been fantastic! I have learnt a new language fluently and got an Italian family that I will feel like a part of for the rest of my life. I thankfully had the courage to go and I recommend everybody to do the same!"

Carin Blomberg, exchange student Italy

“The adventure of my life”

"You live in a little bubble of happiness. Just think of starting your life again in a new place. It’s hard when you don’t understand the language, but as you all know – you learn from your mistakes. If you’re looking for the adventure of your life, go for a high school year in Spain!"

Johanna Dahl, exchange student Spain

“You’ll love the Aussie lifestyle!”

"This year my life was changed in a positive way. I have become more open, kind and helpful. I have new friends for life and a second family. You will love the relaxed Aussie lifestyle, their kindness, language and openness in a nation of many possibilities!"

Amanda Nilsson, exchange student Australia

Veelgestelde vragen
